Most residents of Northern Illinois and the Chicago area recognize drunk driving as a serious crime with serious penalties. Unfortunately, drunk driving can easily lead to more serious criminal charges, as demonstrated by a recent accident on the Dan Ryan Expressway.
The allegedly drunk driver is blamed for causing a three-car, chain-reaction crash that injured two police officers. According to police, the two officers – a 26-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman – were injured when the suspect crashed into the rear of their squad car near the 31st Street Exit.
They were taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center with minor injuries. After being hit, the police squad car crashed into a Jeep Compass. The driver who caused the collision and the driver of the Jeep and his female passenger were also taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.
Additional criminal charges
The driver who allegedly caused the accident has been charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license, operating an uninsured motor vehicle, failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, improper lane usage, following too closely and failing to wear a seat belt. The additional charges quickly piled up, and the defendant, in this case, is facing significant penalties if he is convicted on any of the related charges.
